Stigma is ubiquitous for individuals who are overweight and obese; it is often unrecognized and perpetrated by those in medicine. Weight stigma and weight bias create barriers to providing care in long term care settings. This session will familiarize health professionals with weight stigma and weight bias and how they contribute to poor care. Trauma-informed strategies to address weight stigma that can be employed at individual and organizational levels will be discussed. Methods for developing and implementing weight inclusive policies in long term care settings will also be discussed. Attendees will be introduced to philosophies of nutrition that de-emphasize restrictive dieting as a means for weight loss and promote more healthful, weight inclusive approaches to balanced nutrition in the older adult.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this session, learners will be able to:
  • Define weight bias / weight stigma and describe how these can cause harm to individuals when carried out by healthcare professionals in PA-LTC
  • Apply trauma-informed care strategies to reduce weight bias and stigma among healthcare professionals
  • Develop PA-LTC care practices for persons with obesity using a person-centered, trauma-informed lens
