(MO04) Evaluation of Care Facility Resistance to Implementing Advance Directives with Dementia Patients

This session will review obstacles to LTCs fully respecting and implementing the ADs of patients/residents, including VSED advance directives, when the patient reaches a pre-identified loss of function based. This session will present data from an IRB-approved study which surveyed the entire AMDA membership via email, and received 137 responses.

Topics to be covered include (1) whether and why LTC sometimes decline to abide a patient/resident's AD; (2) whether that refusal is precipitated by a misunderstanding of the application of relevant state and federal laws and regulations; and (3) whether and to what extent the medical directors of LTCs are committed themselves to either support or oppose the implementation of patient VSED advance directives. An evidence-based analysis of respondent subgroups including geographic location, facility bed size, religious affiliation, non/profit status will also be discussed.
